Amazingly, it's the beginning of Spring, 2011! I was
blessed to end 2010 by visiting our teams deployed in Iraq and meeting the units
they expertly support. The dedication, mission focus, and professionalism of our
deployed HTS teammates is unwavering. Our support of Operation New Dawn (OND)
continues and we are coordinating closely with the US Forces-Iraq leadership to
determine the way ahead.
In Afghanistan, we continue to support US,
Marine, and Allied forces from the brigade level to theater. In response to
additional requirements, we are fielding four additional teams in Afghanistan to
provide the deployed units with a baseline of socio-cultural understanding. We
are working alongside key civil-military enablers to include civil affairs and
female engagement teams. HTS teams continue to provide our unique, team-based,
social science research methodology to support decision-makers.

The Reachback Research Center (RRC) main purpose is to help the
forward-deployed Human Terrain assets answer commanders' specific requests for
information concerning his AOR. The RRC enables supported commanders to access a
wide body of academic knowledge in order to rapidly address a wide range of
socio-cultural issues in their AOR that affect their operational decisions.
There is one RRC with two geographically separate cells. The Fort
Leavenworth RRC, consisting of 25 analysts, primarily supports deployed HTS
assets in Afghanistan. The Newport News, Virginia RRC, consisting of 23
analysts, primarily supports deployed HTS assets in Iraq.

TRADOC G-2 Operations Offers Employees Insight
The "business" office for TRADOC G-2 Fort Monroe manages
three large administrative components: contracts, human and financial resources.
Known as G-2 Operations, they perform these staff functions for not just
HTS, but other organizations as well, tracking personnel, budget, pay and a host
of issues for hundreds of employees.
Deputy Director of Operations Sarah Brown says, "working
with HTS is like managing three tribes -- military, contractors and Department
of Army Civilians, whose benefits and pay are all separately determined."

The Knowledge Management Directorate is sending two data content analysts
and two field service representatives to work with deployed team to improve HTS
support for Commanders through efficient knowledge sharing. In Iraq the KM staff
will work to close-out a 7 or 8 years mission for departing teams in what one
FSR calls "a really interesting time in Iraq." They will check on equipment
status, in some cases transporting it to where it needs to be. In large part
they will be working to accomplish objectives identified by the TSO in Baghdad.
The KMO, Tom Best, manages the team and his senior engineer, Jashaan Robinson,
works to support the TSO.
